Digital Divides

It seems that I have read a lot about the Digital Divides this week. I am not sure what I feel after discussing topics with my group as well as reading about it for my article review. I do believe that students from minorities do not have the access at home that others may. I could not assign an assignment that involves computers for homework. It would have to be completed in school or after. I do think that my students are at a disadvantage because of the lack of resources. I wish there was a magic answer in order to help control the gap.

I did experience the same thing when I was doing my student teaching in Madison. We also have that problem in Port too. I have out students access codes to get onto the book's website to view their textbook at home. There were some students that weren't able to do it at home and some students who's parents would not give them access to the internet because they were "not mature enough to handle it." Not only is it a minority issue for us it exists within the school as well. Many people are about to have access to a lot more technology than I have access to. It would be nice to have an endless budget.

Unfortunately this is a REAL issue and it just accentuates the disparity between communities and individuals. It just supports the needs to provide additional services - after hours school, public library access etc.
