I did enjoy using the different search engines. I found that many different websites came up with each search engine, things I have never seen before even after I have exhausted my google searches. I did also not know that you could add or subtract words, use - or + signs and use quotations in our searches. I thought they were only good for library catalog searches.
Word processing is very important in a classroom setting. My kids are not exposed to it as much as they need to be. My students have done a few small typing samples for me, logged onto the internet and typed in web addresses. I think if they were exposed more they would become stronger writers. This is because with the grammer auto correct they would have to think about their wording.

I think that some of the codes used for searching (+,-," ") aren't taught enough to the students. It does help with narrowing down the search. Practicing helps that become easier and more effective down the road.
As for the auto-correct, I prefer typing to writing, because it allows me to put more focus on their ideas; I remember from teaching the primary that kids really focus on the spelling rather than the ideas and the detail. Processing skills help greatly in that area.
With your young students you will have a lot of success with WP programs. Young learners love to write and will have so much more success with the grammar and spell check. Look into word prediction add on software, like co-writer. They love it!
Personally, I prefer typing over writing long hand. I don't know what I ever did before word processing. I seem to develop a writer's block if I have to do a writing task by hand. My penmanship is bad and continues to get worse as the fibromyalgia in my hands gets worse. Luckily, the parents of my students are never exposed to my chicken scratch!
